Manga Manga Manga, A Celebration of Japanese Animation at the ICA

In 1992 London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts was the venue for a festival of Japanese animation sponsored by Manga Video. I was commissioned to write the Festival programme, which featured my short articles alongside promotional art and/or images from each film screened.
Several films, including Lensman and Legend of the Overfiend, were making their UK debut prior to release on the Manga Video label. Interestingly, about half the films shown were not released on VHS in the UK and two – Twilight of the Cockroaches and Robot Carnival – are still unreleased in the UK.
Other films screened were Akira, Venus Wars, Grave of the Fireflies (as Tombstone for Fireflies,) Castle in the Sky (as Laputa,) My Neighbor Totoro (as Totoro,) Kiki’s Delivery Service, Odin, Project A-Ko and Fist of the North Star.
