The Manga Bible
The Manga Bible was commissioned by Octopus and published by Ilex Press, now one of their imprints and publishers of my earlier snack-sized guide A Brief History of Manga. Telling the story through text, design and image is in Ilex’s DNA, and so although much bigger at 320 pages, The Manga Bible has the same enticing design, beautifully laid out and overflowing with images that enhance and amplify every word I wrote.
I had so much fun writing it, and it’s opened new paths for me to explore. There is so much more to manga than even the current tidal wave of Western releases suggests.

“The Manga Bible (has) something for everyone who wants to understand the appeal of manga and, by extension, anime. The tone is conversational, with terms explained without being patronising … not talking down but talking with, encouraging you to form ideas and put things together for yourself, whilst showing the full scope of history and culture. This is a must-have title for anyone looking to learn more about why manga continues to grow in popularity.”

“If you’re curious about the origins of manga, and how it became the global icon it is today … do I have a recommendation for you It takes you on a journey through time, from the very first iterations of manga, to the titles you and I are reading right now, and how we got here. I’d highly recommend The Manga Bible.”

“What unfolds is a conversation about manga not as a genre but as a tradition — one shaped by wartime censorship, post-occupation reinvention, the comics that excluded women and the ones that didn’t, and an industry that has always known how to dress the same essential human story in new clothes for each new generation. Helen’s argument is quiet but firm: this isn’t niche fandom. It’s one of the most sophisticated and durable storytelling systems the world has produced.”

“Manga has a first-impression problem. It’s enormous, genre-defying, visually foreign, and comes wrapped in the kind of devoted fan energy that makes newcomers feel like they’ve wandered into the graduate seminar by mistake. Helen contextualizes all of it: the cartoony violence, the naïve heroines, the Indonesian protesters waving a One Piece flag, and why manga that looks contemporary might actually be set in your mother’s girlhood.
Helen McCarthy is the author of the first English-language books on Japanese animation and on Hayao Miyazaki — which is to say, she was there taking manga seriously before the rest of the English-speaking world had even formed an opinion about it. The Manga Bible (is) an accessible, people-first entry into the world of manga and the artists behind it.”

“not only a work about an art form, but … almost artistically valuable in itself, beautifully and carefully designed and illustrated. This visually rich book provides a terrific overview of manga, from its beginnings in the 12th century to the international phenomenon of the 21st century.”
