The new Miss Dior ad for the US market is one of the most powerful homages to anime since the Vuitton Superflat ad. Dior talks of its history and its links with French animation masters; I also see echoes of ‘Perfect Blue’ and the ‘Magnetic Rose’ segment in ‘Memories’.
Influence of this depth takes years to develop. The kids who took the seed into their open hearts and minds grow up to become artists, bringing their own take on all that inspired them to the commercial world. Here they’ve embodied more than a character; she has become the key to a Franco-American translation of Japan’s animated aesthetic.
